I'm one of those guys with the problem. Started after I took 30-40 gallons of 10%mix on an empty tank. Usually I only took the mix at the end of season to top off tank prior to storage. Last year NY started using it all year round, no longer a "Winter Mix". Went out to the mouth of the harbor and after a minute of so of running engines didn't seem right so headed back, coming off plane I had a heck of a time keeping engines running. Changed filters, only found sediment and got engines running again.
Ran Okay for awhile then fuel burn creeped up, did a full tune up and ran alright, till I bent a push rod. Replaced it then a valve got stuck. Then another rod and another. Differnent rod each time.
Pulled all heads and found what looked like tar all over the intake manifold, bottom of carbs and valves. Stupid me I dismissed the fuel as mechanic told me my problem was due to bad heads. Anyway put engine back together and after a short run had same problem, bent rods.
Winter layup I removed all fuel and cleaned tank the best I could, installed Fram tar/varnish 1 micron filters and this year have been running, but still get a valve hang up/bent push rod way too often. Not sure if its from the fuel, old gunk from last year still hanging around or bushings in new head job too tight.
Anyway no answers other then, yeah I have a problem, and I believe it stems from the ethenol mix cleaning the 40 years of tars and varnish. If I can't fix by years end, new boat or new tank.
Oh, pops started to have same similiar problems with his 1966 Hatteras, and when he converted to diesel this year he put a few gallons of the gas in his truck, went 6 miles before truck started crapping out. Had to have tank drained. Coincidence?
