John, I feel your pain. I can't believe lift mfgs don't put limit switches on these lifts. My neighbor did almost the same thing. I asked the installer and he said they come with momentary switches so you can't leave them engaged. This lift had a momentary switch but his wife was distracted and kept her finger on the button till she heard the bang. I figure a simple limit switch in the Up & Down position would cut out around 75% of their service calls for birdcaged cables and dropped boats.
