John:
I second what Dave and Tom have said. I have TAMD60Bs in my B31 Sportfish and they have been very reliable and very satisfactory. Parts, particularly cooling system parts are VERY expensive if you buy Volvo.
THanks to this board, when my transmission oil coolers went, I was turned onto Lenco -- Volvo quoted me over $700 just for the insert bundle for the oil cooler. I got TWO complete coolers from Lenco for under $500 including next day shipping.
When I had my engines majored 4 years ago, I think I spent somewhere around $7,000 per motor. THat included NEW wiring harnesses, and everything else you would normally expect. The only reason why that oil cooler went was because of that imaginative design team at Volvo -- A couple bundle, surrounded by a bronze housing, held together by a stainless threaded rod. Go figure why it didn't last, hunh?
Mine burn very little oil -- about a quart per canyon trip (and I think that is more leaks than burn) and thanks to Algea X, then don't smoke.
I run 23kt cruise burning 12 total per hour with a full load.
