A guy in Canada gets up to 700 hp out of the 5.9 for drag racing. He uses the 24 valve block, puts the Bosh manual injector pump off the 12 valve engines on it to turn it up. He says these engines are run on the track once, then torn down. He did tell a friend of mine he would not hesitate to go to 425 hp or so in a truck and drive it down the road daily. The problem I see is longivity - which will be poor, and fuel economy, likewise. These are two of the things we buy diesels for in the first place. I have talked to lots of people with 315 - 330 hp 6BTA's in boats 35 feet or larger who have had a lot of trouble, too much weight for the engine, overworks them at that hp. I would think that larger boats would be better served with the "C" series Cummins, and boats the size of 31's don't need that much (425 hp) power. Don't get the idea I don't like the 5.9, - I have a 24 valve in my truck with 125,000 miles that runs like new, and two converted 12 valves in my boat that we have boosted from 160 hp to around 260. My truck driver friends say Cummins has a sad history of taking a good engine and goosing the horsepower up until it becomes not nearly as reliable.
