My views & experience. When I became the Steward of AJ in the early 90's, she had been painted very un-professionally with some crazy paint that oxidized and turned to a bone finish. No amount of wax would shine up the topsides. So after a lot of research on gel coat, Awlgrip, Awlcraft and Imron, I had her professionally painted top to bottom with Imron 5000. The decks were painted too and shot with non-skid. The results were spectacular. Now after nearly 5 years and only one wax job she still looks like new. The Imron 5000 is truly repairable. When the yard was doing the paint job in Dec. 2000, there was a streak down the side of the hull below the port side outlet for the forward bilge pump, obviously caused by not enough prep and oil from the bilge water. They snded it down in that spot and reshot and you cannot tell it was ever touched.

I'm convinced that the modern paints are better than gel coat, period.
