I know what you are talking about. That brown crap is almost impossible to remove. Yes you have go Rambo on it. The vice grips are the way. Yank,pull, chisel all at the same time. I went over the brown crap with a special (very expensive) carpet can "Drain-Dry". It has a very open thick backing with a berber weave; but is way over-kill.
