In Response To: Torque Question for Bruce (Capt. Dave Kosh)

Dave, if you broke one of those bolts they probably weren't the correct hardened bolts. I've been replacing running gear at the Rivera Beach Yacht Center for the last 6 months and I've seen the bolts anywhere from hand tight to needing a 3' pipe to break them. I'm sure each Mfg of transmissions has a torque spec but I make them as tight as I can with a 1/2" drive ratchet or combo wrench. With the new style couplings you have to use combination wrenches as ther is no clearance for a socket or torque wench. I always use new bolts and nuts as the old ones are stretched and stressed from use. It might also be possible the alignment is off causing a vibration. Did you use never seize on the threads?
