FYI: LCD technology has come a long way in even the last 5 years. High end displays are much brighter than CRT's - and are readable in direct sunlight. A significant issue is that the ultrabright (1,000+ Nits (Cd/m^2)) displays are very expensive comparied to standard displays (easily 10x or more). The 500+ Nits (Cd/m^2) displays are ok, if not in direct sunlight (bimini/hardtop). The high end displays are the single most expensive component in the units. I suspect that many of the less expensive units use displays with <500 Nits (Cd/m^2). The contrast ratios (high end displays 100s:1, low end 10:1) and viewing angle also tend to be much better in the higher end displays. The anti-reflective coating used also makes a big difference. The low end LCDs will not perform as well as a CRT and the high end will blow the CRT away...(at a much higher component cost).
Not sure what level of display Furuno, Ray Marine, etc actually use (did not find actual specs, Nits/Viewing Angle/Contrast Ratio, online); but, compare their displays in the sunlight - and you will see the real difference if there is one.
