no you do not have to remove it .just get 2 big boxes of bandaids and a roll of tape.it's a bloody job,,,you have to losen the bottom jam nut first,which means tighten it down (clockwise)to release the tension on the packing gland nut.that takes 4 ban-aids 2 paper towels,then loosen the top packing nut(counter clock vise)put-6 more band-aids on.once you have the top loosen up put some lube on the threads and tighten it back and forth ,probably has some calcium build up on the threads,then total remove it ,grease up all threads ,and re pack ,replace all the packing nuts and tighten up the jam nut,that should take care of the 2 boxes of band-aids and the rudders....
