If you can do it, go for the peace of mind. Shaft usually break at the worst times.

-Bad seas
-Backing down on a big fish far offshore
-Docking in bad weather in tight quarters

Snap a shaft while underway, besides the long ride home on one engine, you have to replace the shaft and wheel. Thats half the cost right there. Now you add the haul out, mechanic, and lost fishing time.

As mentioned you can usually go up a shaft size while just machining the rest of the gear.
