While I would upsize the shafts, I wouldn't necessarily say its a necessity. The local Cummins rep on the North Shore of Mass has an older 34 Hatt with 300-330hp 5.9's. Because of a fix done to his shaft logs before he aquired the boat, he is limited to inch and 3/8's. He's been running this setup for over 10 years. His name is Doug Courier and he belongs to my yacht club. That being said, he's the first to tell you that if you can upsize, you should.
