repowering

i just talked to a friend that has 300hp yanmar's in his 31 and he has 1 3/8"
shafts.i was told that you need to have 1 1/2"on 300hp engines.he said that there has been no problem at all.so do i need to up grade from 1 3/8"to 11/2"on 315hp yanmar???
