Some sort of protection is a must. It would be a shame to have the aluminum oxide "snow" all over everything Have you considered sending them for a clear coat anodize? If you do it will add about .0005" to .001" to the part so check tolerences first to be sure they will still fit when you get them back.

Most big cities have at least one or two shops that can do the work. They will start by giving you a big number as a minimum batch price, but usually if you are willing to go in with another (some one else's) batch the price gets very reasonable.
