Scott,
The Q series was started in the early 80's and stopped being produced about two years ago.John Deere made the engine and it was thought that the 1200 rpm engine produced less noise and vibration. In reality low frequency noise is harder to dampen than higher frequency with a good sound shield.
Alaska Diesel modified the engine to run at 1200 rpm.
When the tier 2 epa regs came out, only the engine manufacturer could modify the engine and John Deere said no.Don't know how long they will continue to produce parts since it was not a hugh seller. It was marketed to large yachts and commercial vessels. I think the smallest unit is 50kw.
Most companies I think by law are required to have parts for 5 years after production stops.Like any piece of machinery, a good knowlege of the maintenance history is important and having it checked by a quality mechanic.
It should also be load tested.
John Deere are good engines and NL gen sets are one of the best sets going.
All the engines are turbo'd. Above 50kw the rest are intercooled. They made the Q series up to 200kw.
