I have two trunk drains, port and starboard, (in my B38) which run above the water line along the hullsides sloping downward forward-to-aft. They drain through an aftward-angled thruhull (glassed in FG tube), which is located in the boot stripe just ahead of the transom. Additionally, I have surge tubes (section ahead of the forward most T to absorb the “water hammer” should the boat pitch forward) at the fwd end. The drains are heavy PVC pipe (~ 3/8” wall thickness, 2.5” ID) with “T” fittings at several locations to attach various drains. The PVC drain tubing is glassed in at various points (e.g., passing through bulkheads).
The system has worked well and similar systems used by various boat manufacturers. I also use a couple of intake manifolds to reduce the number of below waterline throughhulls as well.
There are probably many ways of implementing trunk drains. I used heavy wall PVC as it allows post install modifications and survived my “beat it with a 12lb sledge hammer” test.
All questions are good questions … probably a few others wondering what the heck a trunk drain is as well.
