If your getting the smell when you fill to top, then look for something in the feed or fill plates.
If nothing found, look at the top and top sides of the tank. I have seen fiberglass tanks leak.
Also if it has been real hot and the tank is full, you might have strong fumes comming from the tank vent.
If its leaking into the bilge, you will see it as a film on top of the water.
The other thing to look for if you have carburetors is from heat, the gas may expand. If your needle and seat has a problem or the float is not adjusted right, you can have fuel spill over down the carb throat which will smell.
Pull off the flame arrestors and see if the carb throats, or butterfly's look wet.
Also check the fuel pump diaphram rupture hoses if you have them.
