Gary - the circuit logic is that 12v + from the start pole on the ignition switch goes thru the saftey switch on the gear, then to the coil on the starter solenoid. With the key in the start position, you should get 12v + on both sides of the gear safety switch with the gear in neutral, and also 12v + at the coil on the starter solenoid. If you get that, then it's a bad starter solenoid.
