Single Control System

I have a Solo single control system on my '73 Bahia Mar that I want to replace. Just can't seem to get it to work right for me. It has no feel and I find myself reaching for gears two or three times before they engage. My first choice would be to go with a dual control system but the instrument panel at the lower station was modified to fit the electronics so only a single control system will fit. Can anyone recommend a quality system they are now using? I've heard Panish is the best but can't find any dealer in my area.
