Batteries are rated in amp/hrs which means you can pull a certain amount of amps out of the battery for a certain time before it goes dead.

Some invertors have voltage cutouts where as the battery reduces in voltage, the invertor will stop working.

As far as engine charging goes, most altenators that are factory are around 60amp. Now to get anywhere near that 60 amp it has to spin fast. Usually around cruise rpm so idling an engine to recharge batteries won't work.

There have been improvements made so that a factory alt will put out higher amps at lower rpms.
Aftermarket systems such as Balmar with programable regulators can put out one hell of a charge at lower rpms.

One thing to remember, the faster the charge rate the more chance you have of shedding plate material on batteries.

Deep cycle batteries like to be slow charged. This will produce the highest voltage and longest life out of a deep cycle.

There are some three stage chargers out there that work to put a quick fast charge and then taper off to a slow charge.

If you use the inverter occasionaly such as to nuke popcorn or mix drinks an 8d should last the day if properly charged from the beggining.

6 volt golf cart batteries work the best on severe deep cycle situations. Two in series and then paralell with another two in series will give a bunch of amp/hr capacity.
