I have an AP-11 on my 31 and it works quite well. However, it does better when tied in to the GPS nav unit. The unit came with the boat, so I don’t know how old it is (at least 5 years),and have not had too much trouble with it other that I lost the rudder positioning sensor, but it was only a 100 bucks or so to replace direct from Simrad. The unit hunts a little more than I like, but that’s mainly in rough seas and I don’t have much experience with other units on such a small craft. I just adjust the gain a little and it holds pretty well. It is great for long open water runs and most important in fog. Just turn it on and the boat drives itself home, all I have to do is watch the radar. No more concentrating on heading, much more relaxing. I would say for the relatively low cost it is worth every penny.
