Fluid fixed it.

Apparantly. About 3/4 quart in each side. Ran smoothly for 1/2 hour at relatively high RPM; 2200 - 2700 (WOT). Tranny was warm to the touch but not hot.
Area around the transmissions appeared relatively dry and clean. (Possibly low on fluid due to two years of neglect?)
My only problem is access. Starboard side is no problem but I cannot get the port side dipstick fully seated because it takes a little umph and I have to rely on my fingers and wrist because of the dipstick position. I tried using a hammer handle to push it in but I can't get a straight shot at the cap/stick. (And I hate to exert too much pressure even at a slight angle)
Maybe I was wrong in suspecting the starboard side. Maybe the not-fully-seated dipstick on the port side was the problem if the system is truly under relatively high presure. (?)
