Here is my battery experience. My previous boat was a 35 foot Formula and it had 3 brand new prevailer gell cells in it when I bought it from the previous owner. Unlike my 31 Bahia Mar, these batteries were not easily accesable (back breaking to get at). In my 8 years of ownership of that boat, I never once had to remove them for anyreason, only putting them on charge anytime I ran my generator since I had no shore power at the time. My 31 Bahia Mar I'm happy to say came with 2 Prevailer Gell Cells, and I don't know how old they are, but after my first year of ownership, they are still going strong.
