Paul,
I've run/maintained 3 boats with electric trim tabs, & at least 50 boats with hydraulic tabs. 2 of the three with electric tabs had at least one electric motor failure. Of the 50+ boats with hydraulic tabs, the only, (and very few), failures were due to corroded electrical connections or faulty rocker switches.
All of the hydraulic failures were easily fixed at a cost of less than $50.00 + 1 hr labor. The electric tab motor replacements were all over $400, labor included...
Other minor problems associated with hydraulic tabs have mainly centered around a fluid line connection leak, again an easy fix.
Another reason that I don't like electric tabs is the noisy operation. Very minor bitch, but I just don't like grinding mechanical sounds coming from any piece of equipment on a boat...
Lenco is the primary electric tab company.
Were I in your shoes, I'd refurbish or replace any necessary parts of my hydraulic system.
Best regards,
Patrick
