Coasting???

Has anyone heard this term beforeA? Saturday before we went fishing, we poked around in the bilge, checking fluids and so forth. With the engines running and the gears in nuetral,we noticed that the starboard shaft was spinning at a very slow rpm, (maybe 40 or 50rpm, just a guess but real slow). The port engine was not moving. Called the yard mechanic over and he said, it's a normal occurance that the shaft was "coasting". Checked tranny fluid and found both sides shy about a pint. Topped them off and still the same situation. However, later in the day after the engines were hot, the "coasting" stopped.

Any ideas??
