Steve - in that flurry guess I dinn't adress a couple of your qeustions. Low oil in the gear will make it shake and lose grip on the clutch. There is a high pressure pump that keeps the clutch plates engaged, and low oil will erode that. Fill 'er up with 30W non detergent, and then let's find out why you are losing oil. Prime suspects are the gear cooler hoses (chafe?) and the gear cooler itself. Put some paper towels under the gear and see if maybe the seals are leaking some.
