Transmission acting up

While at cruising speed, around 2200, I got the feeling that the transmission was “slipping”; the engine continued at speed but the stbd prop lost power. It happened about three times, each time I grabbed for the throttle quickly so I can’t tell you what the gauges were doing. Brought her in at 1700 and everything seemed OK. I checked my transmission and the fluid is low. Now the questions:
1. I’ve had two guys conjecture that the problem was related to the low fluid level, belts or disc slipping or something. Hopefully that’s all it is. What do you think?
2. I’m not sure what to put in my transmission. The manual calls for SAE 30 but the previous owner has both 30 weight (regular detergent) and transmission fluid on board. When I check the fluid its yellowish, like oil, not red like tranny fluid. Could the tranny fluid have been used for the power steering? Since I don’t want to change the fluid, I’m thinking its OK to go ahead and top it off w/ 30 weight. Whats the worse that could happen?
