Walter - I took the impeller out of the pump, so it's just turning the shaft. The low oil pressure and hi coolant temp shutdowns are series wired to the run solenoid, so if either trips it shuts down the solenoid. When you crank it, those are bypassed so it will start with no oil pressure - in effect there is a wire from the starter solenoid to the run solenoid, so any time the starter is running the run solenoid is open, then once oil pressure builds up it will keep running without the starter.

I'm going to do the unthinkable and read the manual, looking for a filter screen either in the mechanical pump or on the intake side of the injector pump. The weather is too hot here to do much, so if I can't figure it out pretty easy tomorrow I'll call Mr. Phasor next week.
