I just recently installed MSD boxes on my 454s. I was fighting a skip in my port engine that turned out to be a worn fuel pump. Anyway, I had both carbs rebuilt and flow bench tested, found broken advance springs in the dists, so rebuilt both dists with new elec. ignition modules, new plugs, wires and finally MSD boxes and MSD coils. It was a little tricky getting the boxes hooked up correctly. I was using the diagram for elec ignition (since the prestolite dists had modules installed). I could only get the units to spark once, and then nothing. I finally had to wire them up sorta modified points style wiring to get them to work properly. I am amazed at the difference in spark! Before MSD I had a good white spark when holding the coil wire near the manifold with a pair of insulated pliers. With the MSD I got a FAT BLUE spark that shocked me thru the pliers so badly I almost peed my pants! It took a few beers and several minutes to recover!!
My engines used to run a bit rich until warm up, but no more. The plugs after 30 hrs are just about as clean as when I put them in. They also run a lot smoother and idle a bit higher. I wish I could tell you I had fuel savings to report, but with the dists out of wack and a week fuel pump, my original numbers were way off. I can say that after MSD but before the new fuel pump, I had about a 15% increase in economy. After the new fuel pump, I think I am worse off!! At least my port engine will turn up over 3100 rpm now. I need to clean my bottom this weekend and I'll report how she does with a clean bottom.
Good luck,
JohnL
