Most units have a low water kick-off, the compressor won't run without cooling water flow, so disconnecting the pump might not tell you anything. My compressor wouldn't run yesterday, found a finger mullet stuck in the suction side of the strainer, blocking flow, took him out, unit ran fine. I once had a couple of 3,000 btu AC units, tried to run one on a 1600 watt portable genset - no go, compressor would not run. With a 3500 unit, could run both, also would run the 12,000 btu I replaced them with. I use a 4.3 kw genset now, it runs everything in the boat - AC. frig, microwave, 1000 watt halogen night light, two more 250's, TV, VCR, stereo. Sad to say, you may need more power. I agree with Vic, that more generator is better than less, even if you don't need it all.
