this may sound stupid but to me if your main engine started acting up and the gen set runs off that same supply side it sounds to me that it's in the line,on the gen set,sounds like a fuel pump diaphramto me ,no fuel no run, and also i have herd that either is not good for a diesel .have you tried wd-40 or crx,it wont dry out the cylinders like either..i have also used deorderant to start a diesel before,anying with aresol will do ,,,,but i think you have a fuel pump prob,and your main sucked a lil air in that line because the diaphram and check valve didn;t close in the pump...there is a check valvein the fuel pump if i remember right..
