Fuel Gage

Can someone tell me the proceedure for analyzing fuel gage trouble. I have an sw gage (diesel). It suddenly began swinging from full to past empty. What would be the proccedure for checking if problem is gage, wire from sender to gage, or sender? Thanks Steve
