If you are using the Chrysler electronic ignition, they did have problems with low voltage, weak spark and the power pack would overheat and melt the epoxy poured over the circuit board.
Since this was mounted over the aft end of the engine, many times I was called out for sticking shift levers and it turned out to be melted epoxy that dripped.
Since the distributor is mechanical, blocking the pvc valve is not needed.
See if you can time from the front damper to the timing chain cover. I have found the markings on the flywheel to be misleading.
Also to check for advance, with the lite on and watching the marks, it should upon acceleration produce a smooth run up and back when the throttle is let off.
Any jerking around can be a sign of bad advance springs or worn cam chain, gear or dist gear or dist bushings.A way to check for this is to pull the dist cap and put a socket on the crank and rock the the engine back and forth. The rotor should move as soon as you move the crank. If there is slop. find out where it is. If it is the cam chain or sprocket, it will also affect valve timing.
Weak spark can cause all kinds of problem including wasted gas on incomplete burns and loss of power.
You might want to look into an aftermarket MSD ignition. These are awesome units that produce one hell of a spark.
I have used these many times and saw increases in power and drops in fuel usage because of more complete burns with the fuel/air charge in the cylinder. You may have to play with the plug heat range to get the best results though.
