440 timing

How far can my timing be off? Just getting started this season and fuel burn is high (like 13GPH at 2650) so I went to check timing and seemed to be close to what I remember as being correct 6deg BTDC at 600 rpm and plug vacuem lines. I boosted it up a tad and seems better, but how much do you go? I looked at my old manuels and find 6deg to 7.5 deg BTDC @ 550 to 750rpm to be the range, depending on model. Seems I need to go higher. I'm already off the scale and engine seems better, runs cool and starts well.
Yard mechanic said just bring it up till it pings then back it off. Yeah that fine for my car, but a boat?
Maybe the advance is off, or I need to re-check the mark on flywheel.
