Eddy,
Turning to high rpm, or being under proped, can cause you to lose speed also.
Your about 1" in pitch to lite which may give you that push your looking for at 2900.

What will happen on unloaded engines is you will just reach the governor top and not go any further. You just reduce the efficiency of the engines and boat speed some what.

But leaving it as it is you would have no problem turning 3100 all day long.
