To throw a bit of wood on the fire, also try to have the shaft centered within the cutless bearing and shaft log. I have seen many bearings go prematurely, do to the shaft being cocked within the strut. Its a quick check, look at the bearing with shaft in place(connected to the tranny) both fore and aft. The shaft should be sitting in the bottom center, without pinching the rubber bearing.
Same thing with the log, make sure its fairly well in the center at the very least not touching. I have seen a Bronze Shaft Log almost cut thru because this was not checked, yet engine was aligned to coupling. Owner just heard a noise/vibration at certain speeds. Would have been a hell of a way to sink a Buddy Davis.
