First, you need to find out were the fluid is going. Tran cooler is a very likely source. As far as parts go, they are relatively inexpensive ($100 +/-).
As far as damage goes, I had my tran coolers replaced over the winter. The mechanic forgot to re-fill (and I forgot to check the level of) the tran fluid after he was finished. I got about 15 seconds of reverse gear trying to pull out of the slip. Filled her up with fluid and no problems after that. I posed a similar question on this board to find out if I might have done any damage. Turns out that worst case scenario is that I may have scored a few parts. However, Doug C. pointed out that he lost all his fluid while cruising at 25 kts. one day (blew tran cooler) about 2 years ago. Replaced cooler and filled up...no problems since then. I have been told by several mechanics that you really have to abuse a velvet drive in order to damage it.
Hope this helps.
Mack.
