Velvet Drive

I have a 1973 B28 with 1999 Velvet Drive 1:52:1 reduction transmissions on 350/260hp Mercrusiers. After running for 2.5 hours this weekend at 3400 RPM's, I ended up back home at my dock. When I went to shift my port engine into reverse, there was a loud and violent banging noise and vibration. I went into neutral and emergency docked on one engine. On examination of the transmission fluid, it was dry. I quickly added fluid (about 1/2 quart) to the full line. The transmission worked without noise or problems to get me into my slip.
Question: What damage might I have done to my transmission?
