I have done a bunch of cutlass bearings. I have never even removed the shaft. On my 28B I found a piece of pipe the diameter of the strut and would slide over the shaft. I found an iron pipe and ground off a little of the diameter. Remove the set-screws, drive the old bearing up the shaft and slice in half with a grinding wheel. On my 35B we used a press. It has two bearing per shaft. The upper strut would have been a pain with the pipe. When you get ready to reinstall the bearings pack them in ice for 30 minutes, (not dry ice)grease them up and push them home using a block of wood if you have to. Most bearing can be pushed in by hand and only taped the last 1/4". Remember to clean out the set-screw holes or better yet drill and tap to the next larger size. I also drill a little dimple in the bearing for better retention of the set-screw. Use red lock tight on the screws and you are done.
