My favorite most embarrasing moment came about 3 years ago. I had bought and refinished a 15' Boston Whaler with a 70 hp outboard. I loved this boat, and sold it last year to pay for the installation of my new Yanmars.
This boat was mint, with all new beautifully varnished mahogony woodwork, etc., and she looked to be quite a boat. I decided to use her as a support boat for some of my rowing regatta officiating locally, as otherwise she would just sit in the driveway, so I might as well use her.
New England championships 3 years ago, I brought her down to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester. It was early, but there were two older guys sitting on a bench, enjoying the morning and the sunrise at the ramp. I was dressed in all my regatta officialling regalia, blue blazer adorned with USRA crest, tie, etc. I was late.
I backed the boat down the ramp, and proceeded to start the engine. I had not at this point decided to back her up. Good thing, as I noticed she was sitting rather low in the water, but not taking any water on. I scratched my head, and looked around. Didn't take long to realize the spectators were chuckling pretty hard.
I had forgotten to undue the trailer tiedowns. I will say that the boat still floats, even with the trailer attached!!!
So much for being in a hurry and less late!
I undid it all, and launched without incedent, but damn, that was embarrasing.
And then there was that time I have told about in the past where I accidentally drove the 25' Whaler 14 miles off shore in a fog, with 3 girls on board, with a single outboard.
The guy in the big hatteras I met up with didn't think I was as stupid as I did!
Fun memories! I can laugh now!!!
