I count myself one of those docking smirkers at times.
The largest boat I've run myself in and out of the slip was a 54 Bertram I looked after for a while.
The most interesting of those manuvers was a head wind of 20knots wanting to blown the stern into the dock.
Removed all the lines except a spring line from the bow pole to the stern I affixed.
Went up to the bridge, threw into gear, ran down and threw off the line and ran back to the bridge.
Upon return, once the stern was between the pilings in about 6' I ran down and grabbed the spring line off the dock and hooked it on with about 5' of movement to spare. If I had watched someone do this I would have laughed my ass off.
While I've never hit another boat, soft piling landings have been known to occur.
With one piling moving out of the way to expose the concrete dock to the wood rub rail at one of our boat yard haul out slips.Ouch. The wind was blowing 35knots beam to with a current, single engine with faulty shift control and non working bow thruster at the time.
With Pats help, the minor damage was repaired.
Anybody with half a brain would have put the haulout off. Not me.........The best shows are at the ramp though.
Cars, trucks being backed into the water, boats run up to far and thru the back of an SUV, missing the trailer altogether and landing on the ramp.I've been known to gauk at the ramp with a smirk.
It's all funny as long as no one gets hurt and some smuck doesn't yell at his wife for no reason, I mean there are plenty of reasons but usually crashing into the dock is not one of them.
After seeing this one day and the guys wife in tears after the lashing, I told the guy in front of alot of people that if he could drive the boat in the first place, it wouldn't have happened and to stop blameing his wife for his own stupidity. Of course there were more 4 letter words in it than above.
After I got done the wife had one of those devilish grins on her face. I loved it.
