I agree that if an experienced skipper were there he would be standing on the finger pier to help with the lines.
On the other hand while I was in college I served as dockmaster at a local resort. Quite an experience. I witnessed one man trying to back a rented sailboat into a large slip set up for 60+ foot powerboats. After several attempts he was able to get it part way into the slip. His teenage son was standing on the life lines trying to get a bowline on the tall mooring piles, while the father was trying to throw me the stern lines. The father slipped and fell backward into the cockpit, landing on the throttles and gearshift. Fortunately he knocked it into forward and not reverse, with the result that the sailboat left the slip at full throttle, leaving the poor boy hanging about 8 feet up the piling! The boy wouldn't let go of the piling and came down it like one of those kids toys with the woodpecker on the metal rods!! I almost hurt myself laughing, although I felt bad for the kid after I recovered myself. He must have been picking out splinters for a week! Rawleigh
