Permit Required for Marlin

A painful lesson was experienced this week at the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City, NC. A boat brought in a blue marlin that placed second on the leader board at that time (around 485#) but was disqualified because the boat did not hold a valid Federal HMS (Highly Migratory Species) Permit. With approximately 200 boats entered, second place in this big-fish tournament can pay up to half million dollars...an expensive lesson. Big Rock has a minimum size of 400#, so the majority of the fish caught are released. As I understand it, release-fishing does not require the HMS permit. Didn't know if this issue would apply to you guys going to Port Eads. Best of luck to all of you vying for second place in the UVI.
