I also occasionaly have a slip with a half dock. Walter has a big part of the puzzle with the one line streched taught that gives you an easy grab. The other part I figured out is a temporary setup of two lines on the half dock (actually I use one continuous line, but it does the job of two) I use them to snug the boat HARD FAST against the well-padded half dock pilings. One piece works as a stern line, the other like a short spring line. I do it the same way regardless of wind or tide, because once the boat is secure like that she won't swing into the neighbors and I've got plenty of time and opportunity to use the taught line described in Walter's post to retrieve my proper docking lines. (Stern lines are easy, just step ashore and toss 'em into the boat, bow lines and springs go Hand-over-hand along the taught line, and a use a good boathook. In my case I have a long reach to the opposite bow line, so I use a very long one and tie the boat end to the dock cleat on that side before I depart.
This also avoids the green-crew problem when I have guests aboard. Somehow they don't seem to understand that boats keep moving and swinging and they must move smartly while retrieving or making fast the correct lines.
When the guests are ashore, and the "real" docklines are properly made fast I undo the temporary completely and leave it coiled on the finger pier for next time.
It works great when leaving too. The boat is held up against the dock so all the guests don't have to leap accross to get aboard, and by the time I'm ready to cast off it is the only thing holding the boat to the dock. Easy to see and be sure all is clear. Best of all it takes almost all of the scrambling out of docking and departing.
