I've been doing it "My Way" for over 30 years and damned if my marina owner hasn't set me up in a new way that is so idiot proof, even my guests can't screw it up. He has stretched 5/8" rope from the foward poles to the dock. He has spliced to each a looped spring line and stern line that go to my stern cleat, and threaded a thinner line to the loops to keep them together. The bow lines are completely separate. I climb on the boat and remove the bow lines and hang them on the foward poles. After that I load the boat, warm up my engines etc. Time to go, grab the two loops on each side and throw them overboard. They'll be waiting for you together on your return. Ooze back into your slip, grab stretched 5/8" line, then the loops onto the cleats. It's custom made for your boat only, but once made, your troubles are over.
