ZF IRM220A Transmissions

Unfortunately, I can't find my manual for my ZF transmissions. My wife probably threw 'em out along with all my damn fishing catalogs! Anyway, I drained out the oil (using the drain plug) and its only taking about 2.5 quarts before its hitting the full mark on the dipstick. Am I right that I need to check it with the motor running and the gear in neutral? Can I trust the dipstick or does the incline of the installation screw it up? How much should it hold, the manufacturers plate says 4 dm3, whatever the hell that means, and the tech data on the ZF site mentions 4 quarts. Any help would be appreciated.
