A few days back during the gas to diesel justification thread Capt. Patrick gave me the heads up on possible legal issues with expense sharing. While that wasn't the first time I had heard it, for some reason it bothered me that a law would be so stupid, anyway, I did some research and found some good news on the subject. It seem that the coast guard addressed the issue with the GUIDANCE ON THE PASSENGER VESSEL SAFETY ACT OF 1993. While the act is 30 pages long, the meat of that I was interested in is on page 23 SEC. 506 & page 24 SEC. 507. Without typing the entire SEC., the just of it is the description of PASSENGER FOR HIRE for as being "A passenger for whom consideration is contributed as a condition of carrage on the vessel" and the discription of CONSIDERATION as being "an economic benefit, inducement, right, or profit including pecuniaty payment accruing to an individual, person or entity, BUT NOT INCLUDING A VOLUNTARY SHARING OF THE ACTUAL EXPENCES OF THE VOYAGE, BY MONETARY CONTRIBUTION OR DONATION OF FUEL, FOOD, BEVERAGE,OR OTHER SUPPLIES" That makes more sence anyway, everybody I know shares trip expences, might as well make it legal. I'll try to post the link to the act for those interested in reading it.
