Tower Problem

While applying CX to my tower I noticed a major crack in the starboard tower leg about 2 ft. up from the deck. The crack is perpendicular to the pipe's surface and goes two-thirds of the way through. I am having it wielded. Does anyone have any idea/ideas what could have caused this fracture? I would like to take whatever steps necessary to prevent this from happing in the future.
