OK I have to ask,
Where are you getting the 2.2 number from for 240 hp 4 cylinder diesels.
I lease a couple of boats annually, and since I track expenses vary carefully, here is what I have seen:
Fully loaded is 4 anglers, 3 crew, food, beverage, 200-300 ice, bait, about 10 rods/reels and assorted tackle. otherwise the boat is fairly clean.
Cummins 210's in a 31, fully loaded 1.47-1.7 depending on sea condition and size of the clients. On average it is nearer the 1.7 number. I get the best performance Vs cost out of this combination. It cruises at 20-22knts and on a normal day will burn 50-60 gallons fishing 30-35 miles out.
Cummins 300's in a 31 fully loaded 1.4-1.57 depending on sea condition. On average it is nearer the 1.57 number.
Yanmar 240 in a 28 that I lease, roughly the same as the 210 cummins in a 31 within a few points.
Yanmar 300-330 in a 31 roughly the same as the cummins 300 with slightly less fuel burn, but in a lighter boat.
I buy roughly 15-25 days on the yanmar boats.
The bottoms are all clean(crew maintained and run frequently), and non of the above have more than 1500 hrs on them.
Maybe the difference is in the grade of diesel we get, but we dont ever see over 2 miles to the gallon, and our diesel is hovering around 3 per gallon.
