It is not easy being a parent, but you know him best. I'm sure this wouldn't fit all situations, but when I would take out my fathers boat, he would always say to me with a half grin "Treat the boat like you owned it" He knew that I always took great care of my "stuff" and could be a little harder on his. I respected him too much to do any different.
