The glue that is often used is likely rubber cement. The original contact glue. If that is the case then toluine (sp?) available at your local paint store is the solvent. I don't know what bad effects it might have on the other material though....
It is a petrolium distilate so after using it it can and should be washed down with a detergent like Joy.
"Goof Off" is the same stuff.
